another hard start, NOT THE GPS!

Here it is another hard starting thread! I have read all the posts in the tech files and have searched all over this board and have not found the problem.
Heres what the truck does:
  • Won't start in the moring after it's been sitting all night.
  • cranks good but just wont quite catch
  • finally starts after 10-15 mins of cranking and cycling the GPS
  • starts and runs really rough at first
  • no smoke when started and just a little black smoke when cranking
  • runs like crap at first as if 3-4 cylinders arent firing
  • then it gradually smooths out as it warms up as if only 2 cylinders aren't firng
  • then it idles smooth but has a heavy rough feeling as if 1 cylinder is still not firing.
  • rev it up past 2500 a few times and presto that last cylinder seems to kick in
  • the truck will run good all day and start right up
Here's what I have done already:
  • plugged truck in overnight, it started up instantly next morning
  • tested the Gps, all were good
  • tested the GPR it was fine
  • went ahead and replaced the GPS, and GPR.
  • Changed the oil and filter, used Rotella T 15/40
  • Replaced the fuel filter and it looked pretty clogged and waxy.
  • filled the fuel bowl up with seafoam.
  • check both batteries both were fine and dated 01/09 and 04/09
  • went a head and replaced both batteries with brand new yellow top optimas
  • pulled both valve covers off and plugged inserted a glow plug into each of the connectors grounded them and turn the key on and watched them all light up red hot within 5 seconds.
  • disconnected the GPR while cranking to see if the GPS were pulling to much on the batteries, (yes I left the other wire, fuel pump i belive still attached) and the truck would not start at all. Didn't even sound like it was catching in any cyclinder with no GPS lit up.
  • checked all the electrical connectors, IE UVCH and conectors in and out of the UVCH

I have not checked:
  • Injectors, buzz test or cylinder contribution
  • fuel pressure
  • pressure reg
  • HPOP
  • EBV or sensors
  • IDM (not sure what thats it)
  • CPS (have a new one in the glove box but the truck seems to run fine )
  • PCM ( but it does send groun to actuate the GPR)
  • pulled codes ( but no check engine light)
The truck still wont start when cold, or atleast takes 15 mins. I now have to plug it in an hour before i leave in the morning, BTW it is only 50f outside at the coldest.
-Could it be a sensor?
-oil temp?
Sorry for the lenghty post, but I have seen several people on here with the exact same problem and I have yet to see a good response. Everyone says check the GPS and the GPR. Then batteries etc. I have done all these and still exact same problem PLEASE HELP!

It is Matt a buddy of mine. I just got off the phone with him and gave him a couple test to be able to pinpoint what is going on with it. I will make sure we follow up and let you know what it turned out to be. JJ

will be doing the SNAP-ON scanner thing sunday morning! Will let you know what we find.
My thanking is bad injector or 2, weak HPOP, IPR sticking or bad.
BTW the GPS were replaced with motorcraft.

? the oil temp sensor controls the amount of fuel at start up, could a faulty oil temp sensor be causing the hard start? Could it not be telling the PCM to pump out enough fuel to start a cold and cranky engine.

I will hopefully be able to run a KOEO test with the scanner to check this right?

After reading the last post it has reminded me that maybe you your HPOP resivour is draining for some reason and all that cranking is needed to fill it up.
