Pretty sure that is not the case. He said if he plugs the truck in about 1 hr before leaving in the morning that it fires right up like it should. I'm leaning toward injector issues or possibly low compression. He is going to get me the IPR pressure while cranking cold to ensure the HPOP and IPR is working correctly and then going to do buzz/ contribution test.JJ

Just changed it last week with rotella 15/40 and replaced fuel filter. No change.

This morning it started on the second try. Weird I figured it would be really bad with the temps down in the high thirtys!

I did try something new, first crank i let the glow plugs warm up for about 30 secs and cranked. It tried to kick as usual but would fire. on the 2nd attemptI got frustrated and just turn the bullydog all the way up to extreme pushed the pedal all the way to the floor and the cranked it without waiting for the GPS to heat up. It cranked for about 10 seconds and the fired up. It still ran rough for a while til it warmed up but I actually got it started in less than 2 minutes. Go figure. I has to be a cold engine/fuel delivery issue.

Good point, I missed that somehow.

UPDATE! Did the scanner thing today heres what we found.
-p1249 ( wastegate not detected)
-p1211 ( ICP below desired pressure)

KOEO (key on engine off) self test performed returned:
-P0605 (PCM rom error)

Engine running self test:
-passed no codes
-ICP value 0.92
- fuel pressure at idle 3700 kpa (536 psi)
-baro 81 hz
-map 0%
-PERDEL (all 8 cylinders) 0%
-Glow plugs 0%
-Glow plugs 0 amps

The scanner had no function for an injector buzz test and the 0% readings leads me to think the scanner doesn't have the software to accurately test my truck. This also leads me to believe that's why we got the P0605 rom error. what do yall think?

I have a bully dog 4 position switch ( stock, +50, +75,+100 hp) The engine readings were taken at the stock setting.

I was worried about the 0 reading on the MAP so I unplugged while the engine was running and noticed no change at idle and no smoke. I know on a gas engine the map would cause the engine to run like crap unplugged. How much of an effect could this cause on diesel's?

I mentioned earlier that I was able to get the engine to start fairly quickly by setting the bullydog on extreme, holding the accelerator all the way down and cranking the engine without waiting for the glow plugs to warm up. The same trick worked today. Could this be related to the icp code (below value)? Bullydog jacks up the fuel pressure and the fuel pedal all the down maybe spikes the IPR?

Yep same problem here, this will be the second winter of it.. I'm taking it in to have the glow plugs and valve cover gaskets replaced.
I did buzz test it and got a number 7 injector open circuit fault, whatever them means.
Truck behaves exactly like you said though.. once it's warm it's fine, but you can actually feel it pick up that a few cylinders as it warms up.

I'm betting compression, check it... had a low compression issue like you are having on my old OBS
