Unhappy Help a newbee (smoke, rough running)

Got my first diesel a few weeks ago. Ran great. Now, runs great sometimes. I had an oil change done, thought I'd throw some Dura Lube in... truck has 226,000+ miles. The guys put the full oil change in PLUS the extra quart of Dura Lube. It's above the full mark on the dipstick. I get blue smoke now when I start it or accelerate. After a few... it quits, I can drive down the highway no smoke. slow down in town, no smoke. Go into a store and come back out, Smoke. It tends to run rough like it had a miss when it does this.

Is this a "let it burn the excess off" deal or should I do a partial drain? I am not getting any lights or codes.

not an expert by any means but sounds like blow by, oil seeps past rings at idle and starts to smoke. I know gassers can do this, not sure about diesels. If it was mine id drain a quart and see what happens.

Yea I bet since it's too full and because of the mileage the extra oil is pushing up past the piston seals into the cylinder and the oil is burning off as blue. I'd get it back to normal level.

I has to be the "too full" it didn't smoke like this for the two tanks I ran through it before the change. I'll try a "controled drain". Thanks guys.

The other possibility is the snake oil you put in the crankcase can cause foamin in the oil causing poor injector performance. blue smoke can also be from unburnt fuel in a deisel. and a miss by the engine can also be caused by foam in the oil. Just my 2 cents. only use a good grade deisel oil. NO ADDITIVES.
