01 ECM/PCM in a early 99 truck?

Question is will a later model ECM with the later calibration work on an earlier model truck?

I have an early 99 van, and i think the ECM is not working properly. It keeps shutting down on me, and it is giving me random trouble codes. I don't really want to pay for a new piece of hardware from Ford, if I can help it. More importantly, if I'm wrong, I just bought an expensive part that I can't return.

There's one on Ebay for like $30 from an 01-02 truck. It might be worth a try. If not, I wonder if Ford can flash it for me if I install it.

The 02-03 PCM is different altogether. Most early 99 guys upgrade to an 01 PMT1 or PMT2 PCM. They plug in and work just fine. Any PCM from a 99-01 will work, but if you put a manual PCM in your trans won't shift anymore

Go to Auto-parts.com and you will find what you are looking for way way cheaper then what Ford wants. Thats where I got the PMT2 for my early '99. I only paid $90 shipped.

If it's cutting out it sounds more like you've got a bad CPS rather than a PCM.

I would normally agree too, but I have put 3 different known good CMP sensors in, and no luck. Some times it will cut out, and not restart for several days. As in, if you crank it, it won't start on 4 consecutive days, and then on the 5th day, it will start. I mean, I will try intermittently throughout the day, and no go, and then some time, it will just decide that it is good to start again.

I also swapped the IDM, and the IPR, no go. It keeps throwing codes for boost sensor, exhaust backpressure sensor, ICP sensor, EOT, you name it.. I have changed all these, so I don't think that they are valid errors. The only thing I have not changed is the PCM.

I posted this in the pickup truck section, because I know that people do this on their F-series trucks. What I actually have is a 1998 manufactured '99 model E-350. I was hoping that one of the guys here could enlighten me on the early vs. late '99 swap. More importantly, I was hoping that some one would know if the vans could be swapped the same way.

The calibration on a van is not the PMT1. It is some thing different, I forget now what it is. I am hoping that there is an equivalent swap form my early '99 van to a late model or another model that would work. Or even just a working early '99 PCM. Doesn't matter to me, I just need the truck to run.

Eli, the calibration code on the van PCM shouldn't matter. If it's running split shot injectors, just buy any late model PCM and it should work fine.

So a truck manufactured in 1998 as a 1999 model year truck *should* have split shot injectors then? I have another truck (2002) down for major work right now, I'll pull the PCM and put it in the 98 see if that solves my problem.
