normal for a box truck?

recently I changed the oil and fuel filter in the bowl. 1st time changing that one.. got some oil on the filter and didnt realize I had to purge it. So I loosen the cap and give it a good crank and theres diesel everywhere. Im hoping its just a really strong fuel pump and it is!! Anyway after I purged the bowl shes boggy for a bit, some puffs of smoke but that went away, I guess that was from getting oil on the filter.
Now im because she doesnt like to start hot. Runs like champ but I swear the exhaust temps are high, no gauge but just feeling the exhaust opening, you have to move your hand pretty quick! The firewall (e-series), right next to the feet can get hot to the touch. And the fan seems to be on all the time but I might be paranoid. Diesel consumption seems reasonable
advice always appreciated
