check engine light
your cam positioning sensor is going bad. when i went out to tennessee back in Feb. from north carolina, my 99 psd did the same thing, and if i put it under a real load uphill it would studder or missfire. i had the code read at autozone and it came up with cam positioning sensor. its located right under your water pump and takes about 5 minutes to install. they run about $120 bucks and are easy do. by the way my truck did it when it started snowing and i was running empty bed. so don't feel that bad, you were towing a car.
