Convert 4x4 to 4x2?

Please no ball busting on this one guys....

I'm trying to find out if I could convert the truck from 4x4 to 4x2. I recently had the local delaership look at the front end and they are telling me I need new needle bearings for the hubs, new u-joints, and new stub shafts. When I calculated the cost, it would run me about $1600.00 to do it myself. The wife is ticked about the truck and is in my ear about getting rid of it. I'm trying to find out what I would need to do to convert it to 4x2 to cost the costs. Can I remove the front driveshaft and the inner axle shafts? Need some help......

ok, dude, that is not cost effective.. if your trying to save money, step 1 - stop going to the dealership, look for a cheaper repair shop.

Here is what someone could do.... The only thing you need to have within spec to drive around is your wheel bearings. if they come apart your wheels fall off. You can just run around in 2WD and your driveline with your u joints, and the driveterrain in the axle, the stubs will never even turn, so it doesnt matter if they are worn out or shot. replace your wheel bearings and drive the truck in 2WD.. Wheel bearings are as cheap as $290 at O'Reilys or CarQuest. You can do the swap yourself if your inclined, four big nuts on backside of knuckle, remove brakes, remove wheel bearing, the axle can be a pain just pull real hard to get out. total cost to have your truck drive in 2 wheel drive perfectly under 600

The stupid truck already has new hub bearings in it. I replaced them 4 months ago. Didn't realize the u-joints were bad and it took out the needle bearings pressed into the hub from the back. Now I'm worried the stub axles are shot also because of the amount of slop. I also have to buy 2 new hub lockers because it took them out also

this my opinion but save and get that 4 wheel drive fixed... Reason for this if time comes to sell or trade your gonna be upside down on value a dealership or person will be willing to give.

Find a wrecking yard and get a new front axle... Easy swap in a day...
