2001 F250 non limited slip rearend oil?

I was wanting to know if 85w140 conventional oil would work, axle code is a 31, non limited slip 3.73. I would put 75w140 synthetic in it, but where I'm located, 85w140 is all that is available on a Sunday. I've already pulled the rear cover to inspect the differential since the truck is primarily used on a trailer and pulling in 4 low happens often too. The drivetrain started making a noise similar to a bad u-joint when first put in gear, all u-joints are good though. What's possibly of a chain loose in the transfer case, or something else involving the transfer case. This is my first experience with 99+ fords, everything else I've dealt with before was pre 94. Any help on the 2 questions would be appreciated, thanks!
