Cant pull the boat up the ramp without 4wd

Asking for a buddy of mine who drives an 03 F350 4wd. He has the 7.3 with just over 200K. Says that since he bought the truck about a year ago, he can't pull his boat up the ramp unless the truck is in 4wd. Asking me if I know anything about this. I have an 06 Powerstroke 4wd, but have never had to use 4wd to pull the boat out. He pulls a 20ft Triton Bass Boat with a 200hp, have no idea what the weight is, but I find it hard to believe that his 7.3 can't pull it up a normal boat ramp without 4wd. I know it tows alot of trailers quite often, and goes down the road like there is nothing behind it. Anyone else have this problem? If so did you find the cause?

Thanks

it sounds like a traction issue until i read this line... is he spinning his tires or his truck just doesn't have the pulling power to do it?

my 7.3 pulled 12,000lbs of boat and trailer up a ramp a few times. i did put it in 4lo but didn't lock my hubs in

if it's a power issue, is his truck bogging down?, free-revving? loads up the tranny but doesn't move?

My best friend has a 20 foot deep v with a 225 on it and 9 out of ten ramps it needs 4wd. Tires are good... but so is the torque. If it had less power it would get up the ramp better in 2wd I think. It's become a challenge for me to try to feather the throttle enough to keep Iit from spinning. It's fun and I barely ever make it.
