front axle bearing gone?

i have a 02 excursion 4wd with the 7.3L. i have been chasing this consistant vibrating/grumbling noise for a few weeks now. i have replaced both front hub assemblies, new rims and tires, alignment, shocks, bushings, front and rear drive shaft u joints. i was about to replace the front axle u joints when i noticed the drivers side axle as it comes out of the axle tube has ALOT of play in it. what i have been reading is i need to replace the inner axle shaft, seal and bearing but when i called ford they only sell the whole unit. also from what i have read the axle seal is pressed on to the shaft itself and requires a dealer to install. anyone have a sticky somewhere i can see or know where to get a good priced shaft from?

I have been chasing a similar whine from my front end. I never considered a front axle bearing. The noise coming from my rig comes on around 45 mph and continues in till I get above 55mph. No change while turning or under acceleration or deceleration. Sorry I got no info on how to change the bearing out, but curious so see if this solves your problem. Any feed back about any similarities in your issue and mine would be appreciated. Thanks

it also makes a crunch sound when the truck is turning hard left. only why the weight is shifted off the left front tire.
