transfer case engaging going down the highway

02 F350 4X4 280k

Never had any issues before today but started a 2kmi trip yesterday and about 200 mi into it 75mph, looked down and the 4wd light was on. checked switch position it was in the 2wd position so I stopped put truck into 4wd and into low range then back into 2wd... all shifted fine so I took off down the road again. got up to speed no more that 1/2 mi down the road I hear a grinding noise and I think the transfer case locked in and the 4wd light was on again. as I pulled off the light went off again as before.

I put the transfer case through the motions again and when in 2wd I unplugged the motor on the transfer case. rest of the trip with no issues, unplugged.

I guess I will be looking for a short somewhere tomorrow, but I wanted to post it up to see if anybody has had any of the same issues to give me a starting place.

thanks Fletcher

I've not heard of that but the 2 relays have caused plenty of problems of not shifting correctly. You may want to look into them.

Have had same issue with my 01 F-250. I know it is NOT suppose to be possible, but mine tried to go into 4- low, thought the rear end was about to tear out from under the truck. Happened twice within 3 or 4 miles, and has not happened since. I did change both relays, don't know it that was causing the problem, but hasn't happened since.
