What am I looking at? - axle questions.

I thought my hub was maybe finished, again. Took everything apart (With hub still on, lots of shaft play..)
At this point, here are my questions: (see pictures)

1. Should the shaft have a lot of play?
2. Is there another bearing in there, or is that a vacuum seal?
3. Why so much black powder??

I appreciate any kind of insight on this...thanks guys.

Mine looks like sh!t compared to his. I have manual locking hubs though, so I guess I don't need to be too concerned about vacuum.

Pulled out the axle shaft completely; all seals are beyond gone, and looks like the outer shaft/spindle has been chewed away from a bad needle bearing.
A seized caliper sure turned into a hell of a lot more!!! :/

So far, I will need new vacuum seal, inner axle seal, and outer shaft.

Did they make two different axles in 99? The outer shaft seems way too small for both 99 hubs I have. And the hubs are the right model...
