Transfer Case Rebuild Directions
Hey everyone, new to the forum and I'm hoping that you guys can help me. I'm looking for a write up on how to rebuild an NP271. I have a buddy with a 7.3 F350 6 speed with a bad bearing (a shop told him) in the rear of the t-case and he's asking me to rebuild it for him.
Does anyone know of a forum or video? Also how long should this job take including pulling the t-case, rebuild, and then installation? any special tools necessary? I'm a broke a** college student so I'm going to unfortunately have to charge him, but what do you guys think is a fair price if he supplies the parts. I'll be doing everything, hes just dropping the whole truck off and then picking it up later. feel free to PM me if you have an directions/videos that could help me! |

I rebuilt one in my 96 Explorer and the only special tools I needed were sturdy snap ring pliers, a REALLY GOOD impact wrench, and some 2 or 3 jaw pullers. I was able to find a good used one from a wrecking yard and it was significantly cheaper than trying to buy all the internals and a rebuild kit.
BTW, the NP271 picture at the following link doesn't look too terribly different than the one I rebuilt, so I'm assuming a similar procedure. Rebuilt/refurbished t-cases usually go for around $1000 around here. LINK |
