Trannie fluid leaked out of bellhousing

I have a 99 f250 automatic was driving it yesterday and it quit pulling I stopped and looked under it and fluid was pouring out of the bellhousing. I know it is probably the front seal, but I have never had one go out all at once. It did not leak any before that. Could it be a pressure relief valve or some malfunction that allowed the pressure to get too high and blow the seal ?
