need to replace my front U joints

I found out that I need to replace my front U joints . Question is , do I need to remove the steering knuckle or can the shafts be pulled out through the the knuckle like on the early 70's GMC's. Depending on how far I need to tear it apart , are there any special tools needed for bearings or seals that I will replace when its opened up. Thanks in advance . Mark
