Repair Cost-Just Wondering???

I've got a 99' F250 4x that blew the front seal last week (have not seen the truck but one of my guys said that's what happened) and was wondering what a fair cost of repair should be. Mechanic that has it said he could put a "bandaid" repair on it for about $1200 and may be good for six months or a total rebuild for $1900. Couple of my buds that work on diesels (motors only) said that is high. Should I get it towed somewhere else as I don't know **** about doing mechanical work in house. Thanks for the replies.

Thanks. I actually called and told them to hold off if they have not started. I don't brow beat or low ball any profession (mechanic in this case) over money but I don't want to take it up the *** either.

You could do it yourself for around 200 bucks if you have a set of tools, and this is including the 50 bucks or so for the axle seal tool installer.
