What does a bad torque converter sound like?

I have an intermitten noise coming from somewhere in the truck, maybe underneath maybe from the tail pipe. It is a growling /ratteling that cycles on and off. sometimes it is just on. It goes away most of the time when the truck is warmed up though.

Also noticed when it was really cold down here (30) that on an uphill it acted like the transmission was slipping while I heard the noise.

I don't think it is the tranny as shifts are hard and firm and fluid looks good.

Thanks

How's the fluid look, when was it serviced last? Any smell in the fluid?

Not sure about the last service as I am bought it recently. I actually think it might be the
EGRV as someone mentioned when Icross posted. I unplugged it and although I have only driven it a few miles since then no noise. I never would have guessed that based on the sound it was making.

Put some miles on it, let the transmission get up to temp. Mine drives fine 90% of the time then acts up when it feels like it. Mine has a bad imput shaft, the fluid smells horriible. It grinds once it gets really hot.
