Transfer Case Blew up!! got questions
I have a 99 F250 crew cab 7.4 automatic, was driving down interstate all going well when it made a loud howl and then all HELL let loose!!
![]() I coasted over and the transfercase was in pieces scattered on roadway, front drive shaft twisted, drive shaft then beat a hole in the side of the transmission! scared me to death........ So now i am putting a transfercase, transmission and front drive shaft but can anyone explain why this happened?? I have never seen this before?? |

When is the last time you checked the fluid level? Could it have been dry or very low on fluid which could have caused it to be running hot?
Just asking?

Could have been a bad u-joint on the driveshaft. Did you feel any driveline viberation?
On another note, I have a t-case and trans sitting in my pole barn. T-case is good trans needs rebuilt. Let me know if you are interested. FYI I am in Michigan. |

No vibration and the transfer case had fluid... I have read somehwere that the F250's with the automatic hubs have had cases where they automatically lock going down the freeway and cause this??? I am not sure!! I have found a new Transmission and Transfer case with all brackets and sensors, for a good deal that has 40,000 miles on them. I am really skeptic about putting a front shaft back in until I can figure out why this happened?
The front drive shaft is twisted like a beer can and that shaft had to be spinning to knock a hole in the transmission and beat the floorboards like it did, it actually bent the the floor board around the shifter up atleast 3 inches..... I am just hoping someone will chime in and give me some idea, the front shaft should not have been spinning unless the 4wd was engadged to twist off that way? Unless someone can explain this... Thanks Again |

Thanks, I found a tranny and transfer case with all lines, sensors, wiring harness and every bolt with 40,000 miles for 1400.00

Sounds like your auto hub pos's. I converted mine to the warn gold plated manually locking hubs. Look good and work better! Sorry to hear about that bum experience. Thats why I have a bed box with a change of underpants to go along with the tools.
Good luck getting it back on the road! Paul |

Well I will be honest, I really think I did pee on myself!! It was unbelieveable when I heard the howl and then just a explosion!! It was just something you would have to expiereience to understand at 75mph..... When the shaft hit the floorboard I about flipped and then it was all over with. There isnt anything left of the transfer case except the chain!! The housing is gone! the shaft to the transfer case is still connected to the peice of the front shaft and thats all!! I reached up and pulled that part out and something had to come to a sudden stop to do all that, my problem is I dont see how it twisted the front shaft unless the the front axles engadged/?? thats where I am having a problem understanding this......

LOL!!! I will get some tomorrow!! Reminds me of all those rubber-kneckers out there when I am working wrecks and waving traffic through, all they care about is seeing a body part scattered along the roadway.....
I can promise you these pics will look like a triple Fatality with severed torsos!! |
