10.5 internals into a 10.25 housing???

a while back i twisted the axle tubes and busted the pins that hold them to the pumpkin. so i picked up a new complete axle which the guy said was a 10.5. well it wasn't, it is a 10.25, and the spider gears let loose and jammed between the ring gear and the pinion and locked up the rear end while i was going down the high way at 60MPH, which snapped the input shaft of the trans
All the internals of my 10.5 are good, what i want to do is get a master overhaul kit and put them in the housing that is currently in my truck(has the 10.25 internals, but not sure if the housings are the same). can this be done? are the housings the same? one person told me that i would have to grind down the outer back portion of the pinion gear (the portion of the gears at the back/driveline side) or they will rub on the case, he said, that portion of the pinion does not make contact with the ring gear. I have been searching and searching the web and this site and have not come up with anything. please help
