4x4 Questions

Hello Guys

I don't know if I have a problem or not and I am not an experienced 4 wheel drive person. I have a 2001 F350 4x4 7.3.

I have difficulty operating the truck off road in anything except dry solid ground.

I can move my electronic selector into 4 lo or hi. I can hear and feel the transfer case engage. If the truck is on pavement when I engage in low I can feel the front wheels pulling the truck (or at least I think that’s what I feel). I am also running 295/75 16 Nitto Terra Grapplers.

Anyways I am getting my truck stuck in minor areas of mud. Today I got the passenger side front and rear wheels stuck. The rear wheel sunk about three-five inches in mud and the tread was filled with mud. I had to push the truck to get it out.

Can someone explain to me the workings of 4x4 drive. Such as are all four wheels supposed to turn and pull or is it just one side. Because it appears that only one side of the truck is spinning and if that side is already in the mud then it is too late.

I am getting frustrated that I can not get the truck off road without getting it stuck in minor conditions. I am also assuming that the 4 wheel drive is working as it is suppose to. I have also done this with the hubs locked and in auto with the same results.

Thanks for any help you all can provide to a stupid 4 wheeler.

Is your rear axle a limited slip? If it isn't then only one wheel will spin when you get in slippery conditions.
