Pinion seal replacment

My rear pinion seal on my 2002 F-350 is leaking. Can I just pull the bolt and take the pinion out to replace it? Does the pinion nut have a crush collar or a solid collar behind it? Will I have to worry about the ring and pinion back lash after I take the nut off?

Yes there is a crush collar behind it. Technically your supposed to set the preload again once you undo the pinion nut. That's not to say it can't be done without it. I've got about 10k on a drive way repair on one . if you choose to do it you'll also need to get a redi or speedy sleeve. If not it will still leak.

Yep it's a thin metal sleeve that presses on to the yoke. If you don't do it now you'll end up doing it before you get the leak stopped.

If you have a dually f-350 with a dana 80 the pinion doesn't have the crush sleeve, u should get a new pinion nut and get the torque specs from the ford dealer. just pulling the nut and putting the seal in u don't have to worry about the back lash.
