Other than a bit more bucking (I'll give you that one), there is no "handling" difference. I have seen a gooseneck adapter with a built-in shock and I was told it got rid of the bucking. Don't remember the brand. I have the POP-IT (I think?) brand gooseneck adapter with the 5" offset and it's great with my short box. I have the same clearance over the bed rails as everyone else, and have never come close to hitting them. Also, the adapter is height-adjustable which is a bonus. Set it where you need it.

My trailer weights in at approx. 14K loaded, and the set-up works great for me. Best of all, there is no 5'ver hitch in my bed or garage when I'm not towing. 15 seconds to turn over the ball and I'm done.
