Sending unit SOCK?

As I posted on this thread (Rear tank no longer working) My rear fuel tank is no longer working.. (Lines are clear - blew a entire bottle of Isopropyl alcohol though each line via a hand tire-pump contraption I rigged up).

I dropped the FULL tank (pain in the rear) and removed what I am use to calling the sending unit on a gas truck (apparently not called that on a Diesel) only to find the screen pickup in 8 pieces..

My questions are:
1. Is it called a sending unit?
2. Would this keep my rear tank from working? (since there appeared to be a rubber valve of some sort)
3. Can I replaced the screen/filter doohickey? (called a sock I think)
4. Without going through FORD and their outrageous prices, is there anyother place I can find a replacement?

Thanks in advance

Tim

I'm not sure where else you can get the screen, other than Ford. You can try other parts stores. The sending unit is what tells the fuel gauge how much fuel is in the tank. It is the float in the tank. The pick-up screen may or may not be the problem, but should be replaced if damaged. Judging by your other thread, I would suspect the fuel tank transfer valve is not working properly. I think you can get that at just about any parts store.
