Head gasket or something else????

My dad has an 95' F-350 7.3 and it has been over heating lately so they started to take a look at it. (Unfortunately I am not there to help) Anyhow, he said that they checked the water pump and it is in great shape, but every time it started to over heat they noticed water/coolant being pushed out of the radiator. He told me that they took off the water pump and started the engine just to check things out of curiosity and he said that air is pushing out the water intake port. My suspicions are that it is a blown head gasket. Does this sound right or is there anything else it could be? Any help would be appriciated. Thanks

Head gasket on a 7.3 is very rare. Who is they? A mechanic or your father?

My dad and grandpa are the ones working on it. Most of thier diesel experience is with john deere's and stuff like that. But we always have repaired our own stuff. Unfortunately I am stationed a ways from home so I am just trying to help them figure it out / narrow it down over the phone and things like that.

Well I would put a new radiator cap on and top off the cooling system.

And how much "air pushing out" was there? Was it steam from coolant flashing against the hot block?

He did say that the coolant did look like it was oily, I had asked him about that. As for the air pressure I am trying to find out on the phone right now.

Ok, I just got off the phone with him. He said that when the truck starts to heat up, the water starts to push back out and it is emptying out of the plastic resivore. He said the water is dirty/oily but the most noticiable thing is that it smells different and strong. As for the air pressure, he went more in depth about that after looking at it more today. He said that it is diesel exhaust that is coming out of the left port (facing the engine.) where the water pump mounts.

If you have diesel exhaust coming out of the water pump port then you def have a blown head gasket or something major. I agree with the others when they say it is rare expecially on a stock truck. What about water in the oil or water coming out the exhaust pipe?
