CPS
I have 96 F-350 powerstroke that I bought a couple of months ago and since I have owned it, it has shut down a handful of times on its own. Everytime it fires right back up and down the road i go with no problems. After searching on the forum here looks like the first place to start is with the CPS. Right? I have never worked on diesels so I hope that it is that easy. One question that I do have is if it is the CPS is there a code that will show up? No lights have ever come on when it has happened, also when I bought the truck it had a Actron code scanner from autozone or some place like that, if there is a code that will show up will that scanner be capable of reading it??
Thanks |

before i owned the my 00 f 350 7.3 my best friend had it brand new. he said there was a service engine light on for months before it started stalling on him. he had scanned it right when it came on too.

in this instance, replace the CPS first. $30 or so at the Fraud stealership and a few minutes to replace.

Yeah, it's an easy cheap fix. Slap a new one in there, especially if it has never been replaced. You'll need a 10mm socket and it is located on the front passenger side. It can be kind of hard to pull out.

Well, I'll probably give it a try. Its only done it to me a couple of times but I dont want it to leave me stranded some day. Is this something that should be purchased at the dealership or one from autozone or checker work?

the cheapest place to buy is at an international truck garage. if it is bad, like they said ford will replace it for free. also for the guys that has replaced one since the recall, my buddie got reimburts for the cost to replace his. they also have a tool from otc that checks the air gap between the cam sensor and the rotor surface to get the correct shims needed. it will run the best if the shimming is correct.

OK, this must be like the flue. This morning on my into town doing 65mph my truck started to surge lightly. I noticed that the amp gauge and tac. would move around a bit with the surging. Two hours later I jumped in the truck and it started fine, I went about a hundred yards and it shut down. I tried to restart it. No wait to start light. when the ignition switch is on the abs light comes on and goes off, the battery light stays on no other lights. Starter cranks and that is it. Of course I read this thread a few days ago so my frist assumsion is the CPS. Now that I have been towed home(thanks to AAA) I have to warm up( real cold morninng, frist frost), put my jeep back together, so I can go get the CPS.
