Truck is havin a hard time starting

So i have a 95 7.3 103,xxx miles perfectly maintained handed down from gramps amsoil all it's life recently changed fuel filter and oil but has never had glow plugs changed, where I live doesn't get colder then 30* really but when I go to start it, it just wants to turn and turn and turn over, after turning it over and waiting and trying again a dozen times and having thick white oily smelling smoke dumping out the exhaust it finally starts and runs rough for like 15-20 secs. I didn't have this problem last year and that year it even snowed which is rare, I did have it pluged in last night and went to start it this morning and it started and ran fine, so I was just wondering what some of you guys think any help would be appreciated thanks
