black smoke then died and will not restart

i replaced a leaking lift pump and was driving down the road and my 97 blew out black smoke and died. now it will not restart

i changed the pump to make sure i didn't get a bad one and changed the cps

i have no clue,
did it just blow smoke then shut off or did it bang and clang then shut off???

i was pulling a hill started blowing black smoke then running like crap, so i put it to the floor to make the hill, when i let off the throttle to slow down it died
