96 PSD rough idle, no power, HPOP?

I was told about a year ago to watch my oil for bubbles. Told that the HPOP was maybe going. Tell tale signs were hard starts, delayed oil gauge jumping up to pressure, and foam in the oil. Well it ran fine a couple weeks ago(only used to haul my boat mostly) then when I got out to start today it took a little longer than usual to crank, then idled really really low and rough. Oil pressure took a good 2 or 3 seconds to pop up. Took it down the road and it almost couldn't get out of it's own way.

After doing some reading I see where some guys are talking about IPRs or something like that in connection to problems similiar to what I'm experiencing. Anyone able to give me some help here? I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
-Adam

If you can get a scanner on it the possible codes set for faulty IPR or ICP are #1211, 1212, 1283. You can check the oil in the HPOP, it should be within 1 inch from the top. Have you changed your oil lately and is it at the right level?

I changed my oil a few thousand miles ago, level is fine, it is a bit bubbley though. I thought about checking the level in the pump, where exactly is the plug located so I can get a visual?

Ok, checked the oil in the reservoir and it is right near the top, not even an inch below. ALso changed the fuel filter, it was dirty but not that bad. Oil level is good also. Truck still has same symptoms. No power down low and shakes violently if you floor it at speed. Won't even spin the tires in the gravel. And the oil is bubbley. I'm thinking HPOP. Taking it in Monday to have them take a look. I will pull some codes tomorrow w/ a friend's reader and see what we get.

Are you using an oil specifically for diesels? If not the oil will foam up like you describe, especially the powerstroke.

Well after spending a couple hours on here last night, I decided I was going to take off the valve covers and check the wiring that runs underneath them. I went out to the barn about midnight and there on top of the block sits an end to the wiring harness...unplugged. The plug that goes to the LF, right under the valve cover. Something either got up inside there, or someone trying to be funny unplugged it. I can't believe I didn't see it before. I plugged it in, everything is fine.

I think I am still in need of a new HPOP but it's no worse than before. Sometimes it's the simplest things.

Here's somethin' to try to test your HPOP if ya can't find a scanner to run diagnostics. Get out on the interstate and get into high gear. Then floor it and hold it as long as you can....
If the truck falls on its face after a few seconds then I think it's a weak HPOP because it's not able to build pressure long enough to supply the load.

I don't think you should really run into this problem unless you have a chip though.

The oil pressure taking a few minutes to rise after you crank is nothing drastic imo. Your oil pressure sending unit reads pressure of your low pressure oil pump.

Also, how many miles does your truck have and how often do you change your oil?....and how many quarts do you put in when you do change oil?
