Occasional starting issue

I've owned this truck for a few months now and occasionally I have starting issues. I say occasionally because it's only happened twice, with yesterday being one of them.

The first time a few weeks back was at home. I turned the key and waited for the "wait to start" light to go off. Soon as it went out, I turned the key to start but nothing. It didn't even crank over or anything. I immediately thought that maybe the battery was dead, but decided to cycle it a few more times. After the third time it cranked over and started without any issues.

Last night it happened after I drove it for a while. I was in the store for no more than 15 mins and then tried to start it. The exact same thing occurred where I had to cycle the key a few times before it would crank over. When it did finally crank over, the motor started right away just like last time.

Any ideas as to what would cause this to happen?

Try moving the shifter around next time it happens. Also try starting in Neutral, and try moving the shifter around the Neutral position as you're holding the key.

Are you hearing any click sound under the hood when you turn the key and this happens? Not the big "click" of the glow plug relay when you turn the key to RUN, but listen for a click of the starter relay when you turn the key to START.

I just had this happen too!

I had the same problem..... my 1995 7.3 PSD with automatic transmission would occasionally not start..... same as you described. I'd turn the key, and nothing..... then a few moments later, I'd try again, and it'd start. I was pretty sure it was the Transmission Range Switch that needed adjustment so I adjusted it, but the problem still occurred randomly. Then, the problem started to get progressively worse. I was ready to put in a new starter, thinking the solenoid was on the starter. Before I did that, I put a tester on the switched line that goes to the starter, and discovered that the ignition switched wire wasn't getting 12V when the key was turned to "START". Then I googled "Powerstroke Starter Solenoid", and learned that there is also one on the PS side fender. Before I did anything else, I tested that solenoid, and sure enough, that was the problem. I bought a new one for $24 at O'Reilly Auto Parts and put it in last night, which seems to have taken care of the problem!

My symptoms were identical to yours, and I bet your solution is going to be the same as mine! Test the starter solenoid with a 12V tester (don't be fooled if it is still clicking - mine was clicking, but wasn't closing the contacts!) to see if the power is passing through to the wire that goes to the starter motor

Hope it helps!

I was also having the same symptoms on my 2003 7.3 .. I had just put a new starter on it about a year ago and here recently it was doing the same as you describe. I took the starter off and had it tested at Autozone. It tested good so i pt it back on ,, it started 4 times in a row then quit working again . I took it back and demanded a replacement and so far it seems to be that was the prob... JUNKIE AUTOZONE PARTS GRRRR

New starter = fixed in my case
