sqeaky belt?
I have a 97 f-250 4x4 and i just got back from pismo beach. On the way home the belt started squeaking. My buddies told me its just a little sand and salt water, wash it out and it will go away. I got home sprayed it down and it went away. The noise came back. I sprayed all the pullies with WD-40. The noise goes away and comes right back. I noticed my steering was stiff and i bent my steering stabalizer so i replaced that. When im sitting still i pretty much have no power steering. When i take off its fine. The sound seems like its coming from the pully in front of the power steering pump. I cant get rid of this noise! Any advice would be great.

Your belt went on a diet and lost a fair amount of rubber. Time for a new one before you buff up all your pullies. They don't last forever. Cost about $50.

Sounds like your powersteering pump is shot. I would check the fluid level if it is good. Then the only other thing you can do is replace the pump.

The powersteering level is fine. It doesnt make that winding noise when your low on fluid. Ive never hurd of replacing a belt when the sound is focused on a pully? When i spary WD-40 on it the pully for the powersteering pump freezes up sometimes.

The bearing on the pulley is bad. That is what the squeaking is from. Only fix I know of for this is replace the pump.
The bearing is actually on the driveshaft for the pump. It is not on the pulley, when you replace the pump you will use your old pulley. So you will need a pulley puller for the powersteering pump. This is different then the fork style pulley puller. |

The sound is not coming from the bearing. maby the lack of, but you need to take the belt off the truck and try to spin the p/s pump. if i dont spin freely replace it. dw40 will just let the belt slip on the pully thats all that it will do at this point. you also need to check all of the other p/s fuild try to change all of it. oh and by the way if you drove for a little bit like this you pry need a new belt also. if you do change all of this stuff just make sure that everything is clean with a new belt.

two things
1. if you buy a belt from oreillys its lifetime 2. mine squeeks too but i know its from the belt tensioner barely kissing a metal piece and thats why mine squeeks its not a problem, just annoying. |
