water in fuel

Truck wouldn't start yesterday,check engine light was on,got out and opened the water seperator and let some fuel out and it cranked right up and no problem the rest of the day,I thought a "water in fuel "light was supposed to come on?

Was there what in the fuel? If you have a check engine light get it scanned you have codes stored.
