Exhaust backfire with FLAMES?? HELP!!

Alright I have a 96 with around 289,xxx miles and I just put a stack on it and I was driving down the road going about 75 or 80 and let off the pedal and when I pressed it down again it backfired and blew a flame about 5 foot out my stack and scared the piss out of me and everyone around me.. So what is the cause of this and how can I stop it because about had a heart attack. So if anyone knows what this is please help.
