Now it really sounds like the Fuel Pump died. Our pump is a tandem pump, one side is a high volume low pressure from the tank to the bowl and then from the bowl back to the pump to build high pressure to the the heads.

On start up the PCM only monitors Batt. voltage, HP oil in the rails, and engine RPMs. The truck cannot see fuel pressure

I'm going to say yes as when this started you had smoke and fuel in the bowl, now you have neither.

Pull one of the return lines (from one of the heads) off the front of the bowl and crank again. Did fuel come out?

Ford pumps are in the neighborhood of $300. Auto stores are near $250. With either of those expenses you almost ought to start considering E-Fuel.

Electric fuel delivery like modern diesels. Takes all the sh!t out of the engine valley an puts it under the truck. E-Fuel your truck and give the parts to your father to fix his.
