Hard to start cold.

I'm asking this for my neighbor so I don't know to much about his problem. He has a '97, it starts great when plugged in but extremely hard to start when cold. He has replaced glow plugs, glow plug relay and batteries. Any ideas? Thanks

Is he getting a bunch of white smoke on startup? How many miles on the truck? Have him check the starter. They do crank slower over the years (and sometimes folks don't really notice) and that can make a big difference. Check to make sure all the connections (all battery cable and starter lead ends) are clean and tight. Cheers!

I believe I recall him saying new starter also. I've heard it crank and sounds strong. I'll have him check connections though. Any other thoughts?

The reason I ask about the miles is when the injector poppets get worn, these trucks can have some cold starting issues (my 94 did). Cheers!

I'll ask him how many miles and if injectors were ever replaced. Do the whole injectors need replacing? Or just the poppets?

he hasnt had time to work on his truck at all. he heard from someone also to check his poppets. They also said something about a oil temp sensor might be bad, causing the computer to think truck is warm and not turn on glow plugs. anyone heard of that before?
