Fuel Gauge

1995 F350 7.3L crew cab. My fuel gauge has stopped working, somewhat. Most of the time it reads empty and at the most 3/4 after fill-up but then settles back down to empty. Any suggestions as to where to start troubleshooting? Thanks.

fuel pump float inside the tank it is electronic and the float electric pins are in a brass cylinder or the float is shot. only thing is it might take a little while to drop the tank but its simple enough and a new float is only like 30 bucks at the part store
