Fuel bowl stand pipe removal

I'm trying to rebuild my fuel bowl and I can't get the stand pipe to unscrew. The only thing I can get on it is a 7/8 inch crows foot but the stand pipe is plastic and it just wants to round off the edges - darn thing doesn't want to budge.

So does anyone have any tips outside of buying a special tool of some sort? Also, do I really need to remove the stand pipe? I was able to unplug and remove the heater element, not sure I'll be able to get it back in though.
