Is it the CPS?

My truck started acting crazy this morning on the way to work. I was doing about 60 and then it was like the key was turned off....tach went to 0 and then jumped back up to 1500rpms and it was fine for about another 5 minutes. Then again going down the road then it started cutting out really bad. Could this be the CPS? I've never replaced it and the gu who had thr truck before me never said he replaced it. It is a 1996 F250 with around 235,000. Any help would be great!!! If is is the CPS, where in the heck is it located on the motor?

Thanks,
Brad

sounds like the cps. they r easy as pie to change. its right on the front passenger side of the motor. if u were looking straight at the harmonic balencer it would be in about the 10 o clock position. all it takes is one 10mm bolt that holds it in and a lil prying to get it out. i just installed one of the international blue cps's in my truck. havnt had a chance to see if its better tho. it was 110 bux too, u can get an oem one for like 50-80 bux i think. wouldnt recommend getting one from discout or NAPA, cuz ive heard that they r junk.

Sounds to me like it could be the cps. Maintain(I think) did a good diy thread on it. It's up on the front of the motor. It's been a while since I did mine.

BTW if you don't already have a cps, at least you won't pay as much as I had to pay when mine went out. $170 from the International dealer. The stealerships are sellin' them for about $27 now.
