I was tearing into my front end to get to the U-Joints and replace them, then on the way out of the front end I was going to replace my rotors, calipers, and pads as well. However, all of that came to a screeching halt when I pulled my driver side axle shaft assembly out to get to the U-Joints.... The teeth on the inner shaft are not completely toast.... But they're lightly toasted lol.. Picture below. I decided not to replace any U-Joints yet and go ahead and pull the other side out and see how it looks to see if need to get both inners or what... What I'll probably end up doing is completely removing both sides of the IFS. If I have got take the driver side out to take a look in the pumpkin I might as well take the passenger side out and clean it up and give it a good coat with some inhibitor to prevent rust and corrosion. I know I don't HAVE to take the whole IFS arm out to get the pumpkin out but I would rather work on it on a bench than over my head laying on my back... I'll be recording as much of the process as I can with my go pro and posting it so everyone can see what I did and my mistakes.. I'm sure I'll make some! I've never removed a hub/rotor assembly and axle shaft until yesterday and it all went back in just fine.. So hopefully other noobs can watch a noob and learn
Depending on the price of everything once I take out the front IFS i may just opt for an upgrade to a Dana 60......If anyone has any information on what year model Dana 60s will swap into a 1996 F250 I would appreciate it. I'm thinking as long as I stick with OBS year models I should be good.
I managed to find some Dana 50 shafts for a good price... I am now looking into installing a locker in the IFS...
I saw a guy on YouTube put in a Spartan locker but he mentioned an air locker would be better for the front end... So naturally there is ARB... Just curious if there any other air locker brands.. I couldn't find any with a Google search....
Also, I read that Yukon Grizzly lockers can disengage when turning.. Still looking for literature on this.
I may go Spartan or Yukon in the rear and ARB up front... The ARB is almost $1000, then you have to buy a compressor kit... Or maybe Yukon front and rear if I can find out how it disengages when turning.
I still have my TTB after all these years. I'm only rolling some 255/85/16s. It's getting lifted this week. 5" sky rsk with skyjacker 4" pivot brackets. I'm also going to play with adding airbags to the front to see if I can improve the ride.
Very Nice! The link to the Great Lakes 4x4 page I posted had some great information about tire alignment and what not, and mentioned that the bigger lifts, over 2-3", were designed to effectively take into account the TTB setup, and causes people to burn through tires quickly.
But take it for what its worth. I'm not sure about that persons credentials, or how factual that write up is, I am just using it as more information and more to think about.
Can't wait to see some pictures when you get it lifted, and anxious to hear down the road how your tires are wearing.
I have daily driven this TTB for 5 years now. My 255/85/16s are wearing good. No problems thus far. Lift parts arrived today will get started soon. If my TTB wears out or I see a good deal on a D60 it will bolt on to the RSK kit.
Thats nice to know. Also, it works out pretty well that you don't have to change anything lift wise to put the D60 under there. I spent all yesterday trying to get the front pumpkin off. Looking for the retainer clip on the passenger side slip yoke to no avail. So I removed the tie-rod on the driver side, and unbolted the front driver side, rear u-bolt off the leaf spring, and loosened the front nuts on the front side and was able to slide u-bolts out of the way and the driver side TTB arm came down nice and easy... good thing i had the diff tied back so it didn't fall.
Short video to come current situation of my front differential....
I'm not entirely sure what I need yet.. I know the driver side spyder gear is toast.... The ring looks good but i don't want to move it around or spin anything to take a look because I don't know where all of the metal shavings are.. Once I figure out what I need I'll shoot you a PM and we can discuss.. waiting on a spreader to come in so I can open it up and get the differential out of the case.
Spreader arrived today.. and I must say... it is amazing quality... definitely worth the money. It worked on my Dana 50 so that is a plus as well lol...
Here are some pictures of my gears, and diff case that holds the gears...
Honestly looking at these pictures you would think it was, but when I took the bolts out and pry'd it back for the first time plenty of gear oil came out.
It looks as if most of the damage was contained to that side. I did not see any nicks, gouges, or wear patterns on anything else... Also there was a good amount of "grey matter" in the case as well as you can see from this picture.. which to my understanding is ground up metal mixed with oil
I found a great write up for gear oil comparisons... Amsoil seems to be the best.. While the ones with a lot of hype... Like purple, redline, Lucas mostly do not hold up
I got the diff put back together and reinstalled to the driver side arm... Everything torqued down, and just waiting for gasket maker to cure per the instructions... 24 hours.. Will be reinstalling both axle shafts, hub/rotors, and wheels tomorrow... Once the 24 hour mark hits I'll fill it up and test it out.
I wasn't able to record much of the diff going onto the arm because I was moving around a lot and go pro was moving around or not capturing anything worth sharing... So I'll try and do better with the install of the rest of the front end.
Keep going almost there. I finished up my TTB RSK setup. Alignment is done and it rides smooth and I haven't even upgrade the shocks yet. Ended up with almost 5" of lift up front.
I finished everything up yesterday and have been driving it today with no issues.. 4wheel drive works great. FINNAALLLYYYY
That sounds like your lift came out good... I wonder how big of a difference new shocks will make...? Looking forward to seeing how your tires wear and your overall opinion on the lift after you've had it for a while...
Time to go start another thread... Found another problem.... lol
