Turbo removal, what else needed
Ok so I've lost some economy and power. noticed smoke from under the hood at startup. found the gasket between the exhaust manifold and turbo is blown. goina pull the turbo to replace the gasket. ordered the turbo down with cat delete 2 piece pipe to do at the same time. Was planning on doing the oil crossover whilst in there.
Any other mods I can do that would take advantage of this down time? While the turbo is off? TIA, Jason |

I'm assuming you are talking about the donut gaskets that are bad. Make sure you get new up pipes as well because the up pipes are typically all worn and galled up and won't seal well even with new donuts. Slather the donuts and mating surfaces with antisieze when it goes back together.

well I'm not certain if its a dohnut gasket. the mating surface appears to be flat. i've not had a turbo off before. looks like dohnuts only on the downpipe to the cat. I'm leaking between the header pipes to the turbo...guess you could classify that as up pipe?

Make sure you replace the pedestal o-rings when you remove the turbo.

where do I get the o-rings? I asked the local regular parts place and they had no idea. We have a NAPA but is 30 miles away. Are the dealer prices on these parts affordable.
I'm sort of in the country. But there is a dealer only about 5 miles away. I want to be able to tackle this one this week and hopefully not wait on parts. I drive this sucker daily. |

I have reused the gasket on the collector to turbo before and have never seen one leak. While the turbo is off I would suggest gutting the EBPV and swapping the pedestal to a modified one. Do you still have the orange intake boot that goes from turbo to aluminum mounting piece? If so, I would get the updated version and junk the orange boot, they are prone to leaking. Ben |

Well attempted to perform this work this weekend. I had soaked everything the day before and pretty much everything came off fairly easy. I made a 15mm shorty wrench for the left nut on the collector. The pedistal bolt that is next to the EBPV was crazy tight. I broke 2 10mm swivel sockets and 3 1/4" universals. Tried Impact and breaker bar. Could not remove it. I'm ordering an implact 10mm swivel to see if i can get that one bolt off. I have a good Ingersol Rand impact gun. Not a cheapie Would Not budge until the sockets or swivels broke.
It was indeed the up pipes leaking so I tightened them up. Re-installed everything. also performed the 3" downtube and Cat delete while in there. Power is way up. I now have turbo whine. The increase in power is very dramatic. I used to struggle pulling a 6X10 trailer with a few bikes and our mule in the bed. No problem now. Time will tell on the fuel economy but it was worth the effort. Turbo does not have slop and spins easy to i'm feeling good about that. |
