Expecting Too Much From My 96?

96 F350 quad-cab dually. Stock except for a US gear 2 speed aux trans and maybe a US gear chip? Just got back from a 1000 mi round trip to NC towing my Land Rover on a 2 axle trailer (~8000 lbs gross). Got around 12 mpg @ 60mph. Mileage doesn't bother me as much as a seemingly lack of power. On 80 percent of normal highway driving, dropping it out of OD would get me up the hills at speed. Anything more, especially a few steeper grade hills would cause it to bog down horribly. Normal? I have a DP to install and am going to do the air filter mod this summer. Without modding the exhaust more than the DP, would a custom tunes chip by itself get me up the steeper hills any faster?
Thanks - Bill

Stock they really don't have much power. Usually lay down between 165-175hp on the dyno at the rear wheels. The downpipe will give you a marginal bump but not much. You need to get a decent chip in it to really see much for gains. Exhaust and an intake will help get the air in and out and help manage EGT's while towing. Get some gauges so you can keep an eye on it as well. With a chip you should be running around 200-215 at the rear wheels and if you really want a bump you'll be looking at injectors which is the biggest hurdle in the older trucks. They only flow 90cc of fuel so you don't have a ton to work with. Generally a stage I is 160cc of fuel so it's a big bump.

Thanks. I think I'll be looking at a chip and gauges to start. Intake and dp will be going in soon.
