To chip or not to chip

hey guys im having a hard time deciding if i should install a chip/or tune my truck its a 97 with only 70k on it. As of right now it is bone stock and running and driving beautifuly. My main concern is ruining my tranny, i had a 04 6.0 PSD (yes i know POS) but never had issues untill i added the edge chip...then tranny after tranny after tranny till i finally put a suncoast in it still never blew a headgasket even after i sold it. Now i want more power out of my 97 but i dont want to start blowing trannys....soo what do you guys recommend?

thanks, Matt

Well there are a few mods that most people would recommend you do before you chip the truck. First do a DIY 6637 intake. Do a search for it, there are tons of write ups. Then do a 3" downpipe. The stock one is very very restrictive. From the downpipe run 4" straight pipe (no cat or muffler). Once those two are out of the way get a good set of gauges. I recommend ISSPRO but autometer works too. You will want pyro boost and trans temp. Those mods will set the stage for the chip. Now any custom tuned chip you get (PHP, beans, tony wildman etc) will also tune the shift points and line pressures of the transmission. These things are good for the tranny and can actually extend the life of the tranny. Two other things I would suggest you do before you get the chip but are not really required. Get a bts valvebody for the transmission, and a tru-cool 40kgvwr tranny cooler to run with your stock cooler. Then order the chip tuned for the valvebody. That will really help keep your tranny alive. Hope I helped.

I have heard great things about tony's tunes. The biggest thing is that he has free Reburns for life. I have not personally ran his tunes though. I have ran dp and php though. Php is definitely my vote, but really any of the big names are great.

Custom chip will take good care of your tranny. Get a vb/tc and maybe a tranny cooler on your truck and the tranny will be just fine.
