I was told mine had a 'gate on it when i bought it. Later found out it didn't, when I called Banks for a Quick spool housing. That would be a good combo. You can also shim the fuel pressure regulator that will help until you get the chip.

Any problems cold starting with chips? I need my truck to be reliable in cold weather so I don't get stranded snowmobiling in cold weather.

As long as the engine and associated parts are in good condition, a chip will not hinder starting.
