I have a 1995 F350 crew cab dual rear wheel 5 speed that I am pulling a 3-car wedge hauler I am usually Towing about 18,000 to 19000 pounds. To my knowledge the truck is stock with the exception of a performance chip of unknown brand. One of the biggest problems I deal with is exhaust gas temperature plus I know these engines are great durable Motors but they do not have the kind of horsepower of the newer stuff but I would like to stick with the 7.3 I've had several but I've never towed this type of load continuously. the truck has just under 300,000 miles the last 80,000 I have put on it Towing my 3 car wedge hauler. Any ideas on how to improve the performance and not compromise the reliability of the engine would be greatly appreciated thank you in advance for your help.
Any mods to the exhaust? Let them breath. Intake upgrades? 19k with a large frontal area is probably over max. Wish I could find the manual and where it had calculation to determine max load.
With the mods suggested the old girl may not handle the power with that many ticks on the clock. A rebuild with the suggested injectors, better turbo, intercooler, bigger exhaust, newer chip and a set of gauges will get you where you want and as White suggested a better coupling with a beefier clutch. I keep having the saying out of a old whaling movie pop into my head "thar she blows" when adding more HP to a well used engine.
what kind of "chip" is on it now? You would be surprised how much a customized program can help power while reducing EGT's compared to your off the shelf chip.
I have a heavy duty LUK one piece clutch and a rebuilt ZF5. I don't know what brand chip is in it but I know it's old and off the shelf. I should have clarified I'm looking at two things. Short term and reasonably inexpensive and/or something That can be transferred to a rebuilt engine in the future. I hope to get more miles out of this engine then I'm going to put a rebuilt engine in when this one gets wore out. I hope this helps you guys guide me and I appreciate the advice. Thanks
Considering both long term with the long term, I'd suggest the Power Hungry Performance Hydra chip with a KC billet wheel and call it good for now. The Hydra will give you the foundation to make it much easier to do tunes for the slightly larger injectors when you build you new engine later on.
Another thought I'm having is possibly buying a 99-03 PS that has a bad engine and starting with it. Then I get the intercooler and electric fuel. This would save a significant amount of money compared to adding these things to my 95 PS. Any thoughts?
i have a 97 F250 with the baby swamp injectors hydra chip, AFE intake, Adrenalin HPOP and it really woke the truck up big time! nice thing about the Hydra chip is the tuneability for your particular application/modifications.
while i love the 97 have been wanting to sell it but parting it out makes most sense (wink, wink) since people are offering less than what i have into the trans build
Tell me more about your 97 please. Is it a dually, 4wd, manual, reg cab, etc?
