steering wheel play

so first i had a sqeaking problem with my steering wheel but i got that fixed. now the whole damn thing (meaning my steering wheel) has some "up and down" play in it. i dont think it is the shaft but i have'nt the slightest clue on what is up with it. it moves a good 1 inch and it is driving me nuts. any ideas on what the problem could be? thanks

a bushing in the shaft-when they are going bad they start squeaking or scraping. GM's have 3 bolts you can tighten, but not fords. Look for a used column.
