Spooks
My 96 Powerstroke has been acting up in the last year. First sign of trouble was the truck stalled several times at slow speeds, a couple of times to the point of quitting. After sitting a moment it would restart, and usually drive fine. I saw on this board the CPS threads and ordered one from ebay to save a few bucks and installed it prior to going on a long trip. I thought the demon was slayed but it re-appeared while on the trip. Intermittantly as the original. Someone I work with reccommended getting one directly from International so I did. Installed it last weekend and once again thought the beast was slain. Until today when it did it again in the parking lot. It never logs a fault code nor does the "wait to start "light stay on, it just dies, then restarts. This time it died while sitting in the parking lot, idling, withe the clutch in. It is like someone switched the key off and on, the glow plugs are cycling "Voltage drop" and the "wait to start" flashes several times then stays off until it latches for the glowplug cycle.
I am thinking in the direction of a power relay/key switch ign problem ???? 1996 F250 4X4 101,000 miles Banks chip, intercooler, exhaust. Trouble free till now All routine maintenance c/w Rotella since day 1 |

Check the ground cables on your batteries. I had an old F100 that gave me fits until I finally sold it. The guy who bought it stopped by and said he found the problem, it was a bad battery ground. The cable looked good, but had some corrossion under the jacket that lead to its demise. Just a thought.

I have the Same problem, so don't feel alone. My truck runs like a champ most of the time. Some times it misses while moving, but mostly when I pull to a stop sign. I seem to have te problem more when I'm towing. Sometimes it even skips a beat when I open the door to get out or when I leave the flashers on for a while. About 1 oit of 10 times it just dies, but restarts fine. I have been told to check the CPS, but I'm not sure enough to spend the money on it yet. I'm leaning toward the batt. cables. |

I finally got around to workin on the truck a bit yesterday, It has continued to act up through the holidays with the same problems. Last night I removed the Banks Ottomind chip and drove it around for awhile. It seems like the spooks were in it, but I need to drive it more today to be sure. On thing for sure is the performance is sure different with the chip out. Reminded me of my 97 F350 Crew cab, stock, real flat and slow to spool the turbo. Its also probably relearning the map as I think the chip bypasses that. Anyway. Thats wher I am at now. Plan to check all the electrical this morning, connections and grounds that is.
Thanks for the inputs guys GhostBusters |
