Question Manual transmission fluid type?

Here's the issue. I have a 96 F250 with the 5 speed ZF transmission S5-47 type. I am told this was made by Mazda. There is a sticker on the side to the trans that says Use ONLY Mercon synthetic or equivilent. I could not find so I went to the Ford dealer and asked about it. He said they usually use Mercon V which is synthetic. He also said that they make a special fluid but it is about $20 a quart, that is why they use the Mercon V. Any thoughts on this?
The fluid that is in the trans is green colored. I have no idea if it has ever been changed. Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks, Jason

the mercon 5 is synthetic, but very costly. Mercon 5 will replace any type mercon atf.
