Low buck oilfilter magnet

I just got a neat idea from another website on engine oil filters. The author of the article suggested using old computer hard drive magnets to attach to the side of your oil filter to pick up tiny metal particles that are too small for the filter media. I tried it and sure enough it really works. The magnets are the rare earth type and are powerful enough to attract through the metal cannister. I took apart an old harddrive I had laying around. I cut open my filter after an oil change (Rotella) and found like a metal paste at the area of the magnet.. not a lot, but nonetheless it removed that gunk from my engine (97 F250 170K)..

That is a good idea. I am going to look for one this week. I know a guy that recycles computers and donates all the money.

Another source of magnets

I have used sciplus.com for a source of supermagnets and other strong magnets. They are fairly cheap.
