Military Transmission?

Was talking to a guy at work and he claimed he used to know a guy who had an OBS 7.3 that he found a military transmission for that "bolted right up" and was a 4 speed with electric OD so you could split the gears. this guy claimed he drove the truck once and in high with OD engaged he could do 80MPH at approx. 1500RPM

I know the DT444E is a VERY popular engine so I'm curious as to how true this story is, or what options are out there from larger trucks that we could use.

My end goal is to keep the LOW gears for pulling but have a HIGH OD gear for highway MPG w/o the expense of an OD unit. and since my syncros are crappin out and I wanna get rid of dual mass, a different tranny would be a better option for me as opposed to gettin new tranny AND OD unit.

talk amongst yourselves.

I have also heard of the military Transmission but i never heard of it bolting straight to the engine with no mods to make it fit. I was told it was a very expensive transmission but was unbreakable.

But if you dont find anything out on this and your going to do your transmission....do it right. I had mine done one from a local trans shop and i regret it. I had to rebuild it again and used all BTS parts. They have the best and i noticed better MPG since i got this trans because i have more power at a lower rpm so less downshifting on the highway to speed up..just a thought for ya.

and a free bump

After 5 years in the army as a diesel tech I have never seen a military application for the 7.3 and certantly dont know of any tranmissions that will bolt right to it! I would be interested to learn if there are ones out there though. This is only my experience, not my opinion!

yea i figured it was either a long tail or details missing.

what about trannys from international chasis bolting up that might have taller high gears and as low lower gears.

OR

getting a 6 speed from a 99-03 and would it be possible to have a tranny shop rebuild it so id have an extra high gear instead of the extra granny gear?

6 speed have the same low and over drive ( from what I have heard ) but the gears are closer together. Not so far apart so not as much RPM drop between them.
