Question replacing alternator help

I can move the tensioner using a breaker bar to get the belt off the alt. pully. Is it very hard to move the tensioner if it's all the way down? What I'm trying to say is you pull the breaker bar to release tension and then it will rotate until it hits the stop on the tensioner. I see no other way to keep it from going to the stop unless I have someone hold it. Hope this makes sense of what I'm trying to do, to all of you.

you lost me but once you pull the belt let the tensioner go to wherever it stops leaving the breaker bar in the slot do your alt and pull the breaker to get the belt on

unless yours has a tensioner stop arm then it will hold open until you flip it

Okay. the tensioner went back as far as the stop would let it. The breaker bar stayed on and it's pretty easy to move to get the belt back on. Thanks for the help out.
