Towing with an extended hitch

Hi folks. I have a '96 CC short bed F-250 & I am having a heck of a time finding a slide-in camper that will fit my bed (sub $5k I mean). I tow a pile to off-road events and can fit a number of 8' medium weight slide ins in it, and the last one i owned, i used an 18" extension & didn't notice a problem with it. Long term, however, i was wondering if anyone on here knew of any ill effects from using a short extension like that. Who here has used one? What can you tell me about them? I tried a search & came up with nada. Any/all info with personal experience would be taken to heart. Thanks & what a GREAT site this is.
